Overlap between visual inspection time tasks and general intelligence

چکیده
The stimulus display duration required for subjects to accurately compare the length of two line lengths (known as Inspection Time: IT), reliably correlates around 0.5 with general intelligence. It is not clear, however, if this correlation reflects general “speed of processing”, or some other element of the task. There is a consequent need for new experimental paradigms. We describe a novel IT task where participants viewed a sequence of eight briefly-presented coincident coloured circles, the first of which was presented for a variable duration. Participants reported the colour of the first circle. The threshold for perceiving this colour correlated 0.37 and 0.38 (pb0.05) with two conventional IT tasks within a sample of 75 students. It also correlated significantly with scores on a timed measure of the Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (r=−0.39, pb0.01). The implications of these results for the validity of the concept of IT are discussed. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The relationship between three auditory inspection time tasks and general intelligence
Three inspection-time tasks measuring the amount of time required to discriminate differences in pitch, loudness and phase were administered alongside the Multidimensional Ability Battery and Raven s Advanced Progressive Matrices to 75 undergraduate students. The auditory tasks were administered adaptively, and thresholds were estimated by fitting a logistic function to each set of data. After ...
متن کاملTwo Speed Factors of Visual Recognition Independently Correlated with Fluid Intelligence
Growing evidence indicates a moderate but significant relationship between processing speed in visuo-cognitive tasks and general intelligence. On the other hand, findings from neuroscience proposed that the primate visual system consists of two major pathways, the ventral pathway for objects recognition and the dorsal pathway for spatial processing and attentive analysis. Previous studies seeki...
متن کاملAn investigation of the relationship between trait emotional intelligence and emotional task performance
This study examined the relationships between trait emotional intelligence (EI) and tasks involving the recognition of facial expressions of emotion. Two facial expression recognition tasks using the inspection time (IT) paradigm assessed speed of emotional information processing. An unspeeded emotion recognition task was also included, and a symbol IT task was used to assess speed of processin...
متن کاملAre processing speed tasks biomarkers of cognitive aging?
We examined the association between 5 processing speed measures and general cognitive ability in a large (>900) sample of relatively healthy men and women at age 70. The processing speed tests were the Wechsler Digit Symbol-Coding and Symbol Search, simple reaction time, 4-choice reaction time, and inspection time. To inquire whether the processing speed tasks might be biomarkers of cognitive a...

Inspection time (IT) is the most popular simple psychometric measure that is used to account for a large part of the variance in human mental ability, with the estimated corrected correlation between IT and IQ being -0.50. In this study, we investigate the relationship between IT and the performance and oculomotor variables measured during three simple visual tasks. Participants' ITs were first...
